Ingredients

- 4 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 6 large egg yolks
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup dark rum or bourbon (optional)
Instructions
- In a saucepan, heat milk and cream over medium heat until steaming but not boiling.
- In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, and salt until smooth.
- Slowly pour half the warm milk mixture into the egg mixture while whisking.
- Return the combined mixture to the saucepan and cook on low heat, stirring constantly until slightly thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and vanilla.
- If using, add rum or bourbon and mix well.
- Serve warm with a sprinkle of nutmeg on top.
Notes
- Use fresh spices for the best flavor.
- For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum or bourbon.
- Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
