- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder

- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs

- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup applesauce
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
- In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
- Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Fold in applesauce.
- Pour batter into the pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla, mixing until creamy.
- Frost the cooled cake and serve.
Notes
- Use room-temperature ingredients for even mixing.
- For extra spice, add 1/4 tsp allspice.
- Store cake in the refrigerator due to the cream cheese frosting.
