Description

A classic old-fashioned spice cake with warm flavors and a moist texture.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
  3. Add softened butter and beat until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Whisk eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla in another bowl. Gradually add to dry ingredients, mixing until smooth.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Cool completely before serving.

Notes

  • For extra moisture, substitute applesauce for half the butter.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Frost with cream cheese icing if desired.
