- 10 apples, cored and quartered
- 1 orange, peeled and quartered
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 teaspoon whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 12 cups water
Instructions
- Place apples, orange, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice in a large pot. Add water to cover.
- Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, for 2 hours.
- Mash the fruit with a potato masher to release juices.
- Stir in brown sugar until dissolved.
- Simmer uncovered for another hour, stirring occasionally.
- Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth. Discard solids.
- Serve warm or chilled.
