Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Coarse salt for topping

Instructions

  1. Mix water, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add flour and melted butter. Knead until dough is smooth.
  3. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
  4. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
  5. Divide dough into 12 pieces. Roll each into a rope and shape into pretzels.
  6. Boil water and baking soda in a pot. Dip each pretzel for 30 seconds.
  7. Place pretzels on a baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle salt.
  8. Bake for 12-14 minutes until golden brown.

  • Use warm water (110°F) for best yeast activation.
