Ingredients

- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg, beaten
- Coarse salt for topping
Instructions
- Mix water, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 5 minutes.
- Add flour and melted butter. Knead until dough is smooth.
- Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
- Divide dough into 12 pieces. Roll each into a rope and shape into pretzels.
- Boil water and baking soda in a pot. Dip each pretzel for 30 seconds.
- Place pretzels on a baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle salt.
- Bake for 12-14 minutes until golden brown.
Notes
- Use warm water (110°F) for best yeast activation.
- Knead dough well for a soft texture.
- Boiling gives pretzels their chewy crust.
